Growing Parsnips

Parsnips are an excellent crop for overwintering, being left in the soil until they are needed.  In fact, their flavour improves after a good frost.  They are easy to grow once germinated and are delicious roasted!

 

How to Grow Parsnips – QUICKSTART GUIDE
  • Vegetable Growing Calendar - ParsnipParsnip seed deteriorates with time so use new seed every year
  • Sow outdoors March to April
  • Sow 3 seeds together, leaving 10 -14cm (4 – 6in) between groups of seed
  • Germination is slow, especially in cold weather (up to 1 month)
  • Ready for lifting about 7 to 8 months after sowingPlanting parsnip seeds
  • Harvest as required. Can be left in the soil until needed

 
 
 
 
 



Parsnip Seeds

Parsnip SeedsGladiator – sweet flavour, fast maturing, smooth white skin, good resistance to canker. We’ve had good success with gladiator.
Tender and True – traditional variety, well flavoured ,white roots, good canker resistance
Albion – sweet flavour, good texture, good canker resistance
Panache – large roots, sweet flavour, white skinned, good canker resistance
Arrow – slender roots, virutally coreless, sweet flavour, can be grown in deep containers
